Embracing Meditation: A Journey to Wellness and Creativity

Updated: Jun 8, 2024

Slowing down has not always been my strength. Finding the time to pause or understanding the power of deep breathing seemed foreign and a waste of time for me, because like you, my days are often filled with endless tasks and decisions that demand my attention and energy. Now, I use meditation daily as a tool for wellness and creativity, and I want to share how this practice has become a cornerstone of my personal and professional life.

Why Meditation Matters

Around eight years ago, I downloaded the Calm app to help with sleep. I rarely used it.  A few years later, I experienced health issues (of course- minimal boundaries between work and life, rarely saying no to a new project or opportunity- that plus stress and family history caught up me). One afternoon I was clearing unused apps and space on my phone and decided to open the app. I came across the practice of a body scan, a mindfulness meditation technique that involves lying on your back and using your breath to guide your attention throughout your body. I was recovering from surgery, so I thought I’d try it. The practice gave me peace through physical pain.

From there I continued to be delighted by the options on the app and the practices continued to make their way into my daily routine. I started a path that triggered a journey to know more about the practice of mediation.  Ultimately, I discovered the practice is about learning and knowing more about me. Eventually, I found myself doing a Google searches for meditation gardens and sound bath events, telling anyone who would listen about shifts I was having with mind and body, and intentionally bringing “mindful moments” into professional settings.

Meditation is more than just a moment of quiet—it's a practice that nurtures calm, healthy coping skills, better mental health practices, and personal growth. Regular meditation has fostered a healthier mind and body. Moreover, meditation has sharpened my focus. In an age where distractions are just a click away, being able to maintain concentration is a superpower. Meditation trains my brain to focus for longer periods, enhancing my energy and creativity. Each session helps me clear the mental clutter, allowing fresh ideas and perspectives to surface.  This allows me to pour into myself, family, friends, home, and clients from a cup that is fuller.

How I Integrate Meditation into My Daily Routine

Most mornings, I carve out time for my personal meditation practice. This quiet moment sets the tone for the day, grounding me and aligning my thoughts with my intentions. Whether it's focusing on gratitude, setting goals, or simply breathing deeply, this practice connects me with my inner self.

Throughout the day, I also integrate mindfulness techniques. Simple practices like mindful walking or conscious breathing during breaks help me stay centered and present. These moments of mindfulness are not just pauses; they are opportunities to recharge and refocus.

Celebrating World Meditation Day

World Meditation Day on May 21st is a special marker. It's a day dedicated to celebrating and acknowledging the rich history and benefits of meditation. Participating in global meditation sessions or local community events may not be for you (or me) but taking a small step of a few deep breaths and an app download may be a great place to start. Integrating meditation into my daily life has been a game-changer. It's a source of strength, clarity, and inspiration, helping me navigate the complexities of life and work with greater ease and resilience. Whether you're a seasoned practitioner or new to the concept, I encourage you to explore meditation. It might just be the tool you need to enhance your well-being and get the creative vibes flowing.
